A pleasant smell of planed wood hits me as I enter the workshop of window joiner Petter Gantelius. The window frames are hanging neatly from the ceiling, waiting their turn to undergo a loving restoration.
It is a time-consuming skilled trade and Petter exercises great care in each and every aspect of his work. He draws his hand over the recently effected woodwork repair and decides that it is now perfect.

When you’ve used a folding rule every day for most of your life, it becomes more than a tool. It’s almost another limb, an extension of your body. Folding it out and back together becomes one swift motion, a reflex. Just like in martial arts.
When you are a pro. You know.

Manufacturing tolerance is the sum of all possible minor and microscopically small errors during production. Tolerance is thus the divergence from sensitivity, and the smaller the value the better.

On the market there are many makers of spirit levels. To get a good spirit level there are some important aspects you should consider.
-
No one knows how old spirit levels really are however it is known that the Romans used a primitive spirit level when building their aqueducts, in the form of water filled tanks. By studying the water surface mode in the vessel, the Romans could determine if the base was completely flat or at an angle. As early as 1661 the Frenchman Melchisedech Thévenot invented the modern spirit level, but it was not implemented on any wider scale before the beginning of the 18th century.
-
Vials is the vital components in a spirit level. The fluid-filled containers that give you a level reading are called vials. The liquid in the vials is usually oil or alcohol so that the air bubble inside can move freely.
Different vials might appear similar at a casual glance. But the design and mounting of vials differ a lot between different brands, resulting in different accuracy and precision.
-
Aluminium is a common profile material, since it combines stiffness and durability with light weight. The strength of the spirit level is determined by the shape and the thickness of the profile.
-

Spirit levels can be too long or too short or too un-precise. Then there is Hultafors Libella 2000 – a spirit leveling system, expandable from 310 mm to 3100 mm, five times as sensitive as standard spirit levels.

How do you improve the best?! Well, you fine tune and better every detail. That is why the new improved Hultafors MST 180 might appear similar at first glance. It still has the most sensitive vials available, ISO 9001-certified mounting for unique low tolerance and a solid profile that indicates strength and sturdiness. Look closer and you’ll see that the shape and placement of the handles have been improved for better balance. The profile has been given a slight hourglass-shape to prevent dirt from sticking to the spirit level.
The new mounting of the vials increases legibility from every angle, especially when taking a reading from below.
And last, a new finesse is the holes to the profile that facilitates hanging cupboards on walls. You just screw the MST directly on the wall, let the cupboards rest on it while fastening, and finally unscrew the MST. In short, the king of spirit levels still reigns on.
